I wouldn't make much over the new CIA "story". Personally, I think it's a deflection that the White House has little problem with. It takes some heat off the President at a time when his political capital is waning, and helps him by bringing his favorite whipping boys back into the spotlight, Bush and Cheney. Professor Jacobson thinks it's a bad move for Dems, as there are certain to be a few Democrats that will get caught in the net an investigation would bring:
For months Democrats in Congress have been seeking an excuse to investigate the Bush administration, and the pressure appears to be having an effect on the Obama administration. A little leak, a little rumor, and a dispute over who was told what when, is all that is needed to set the Democrats on a full scale assault on the Bush administration via the intelligence services.
On the consequences, the NY Times gets it right:That makes four fronts on which the intelligence apparatus is under siege. It is just the kind of distraction from Mr. Obama’s domestic priorities — repairing the economy, revamping the health care system, and addressing the long-term problems of energy and climate — that the White House wanted to avoid.
A series of investigations could exacerbate partisan divisions in Congress, just as the Obama administration is trying to push through the president’s ambitious domestic plans and needs all the support it can muster.
The Dems are swinging in the dark. They will hit someone, it's just not clear who that someone will be. My guess is that it will not be the Bush administration. As I predictedmonths ago, the Dems will devour Obama's agenda, and damage at least some of their own along the way for going along with programs they now claim were illegal.
I like what Greg Gutfield wrote as well:
I mean, if your job is to sneak around the globe killing really bad people, then it should be kept secret – which is something frowned upon by people who don’t understand that beating evil means eradicating it. We call them asshats. You see them now, trying to score political points out of something that didn’t even happen (although, I wish it did).
Which brings me to a handy quiz you can take while you’re on a bus, a train, or perhaps even a plane!
Of the two statements below, check off the one you most agree with:
-The thought of the CIA contemplating a secret plan to kill terrorists behind 9/11 strikes you as wrong – so wrong in fact that those involved in it should be investigated for war crimes.
-The thought of the CIA contemplating a secret plan to kill terrorists behind 9/11 strikes you as something the CIA is paid to do, and if they don’t do it, they should probably be fired or at least relegated to running the sexual harassment seminar in human resources.
If you agreed with the first statement, then get off that bus, train or plane. You don’t deserve to be there. After all, the very actions that you want to see prosecuted are the actions guaranteeing your safety on those modes of transportation.
