Watched a few clips of the event, and here is my two cents:
I thought the President had a great bit with the "video of my birth" (if you haven't seen it, he then ran a clip from The Lion King). Thought it was pretty funny, and spot on in light of this week's birth certificate unveiling.
I thought taking shots at The Donald (by POTUS and host Seth Meyers) was a bit over the top - hit him once or twice, then move on. This event isn't about Trump (or other political opponents, it's about the President, and his relationship with the people who cover him). One of the steadfast rules of politics is to not "punch down", as it actually works to elevate your target. Yes, Trump should have taken a shot or two because of the birth certificate, but like every SNL skit, it went on a few minutes too long.
I do prefer how GWB practiced a more self-depricating style in his WHCD events. Perhaps that is just my personal preference. I like Tosh's style, but dislike the "act" of Dane Cook. Could be the same with how Obama chooses to do his act. Bush (and other Presidents) used the event to poke fun at himself, Obama uses the forum to mock his political enemies. Not my cup of tea.
This shouldn't have been a roast of Trump (another Network already did that earlier this year), but that is what the event turned into. Legal Insurrection has a nice compare-and-contrast of the two Presidents, and how they approached the evening.
