Politifact dubbed Romney's claim that Jeeps would be made in China the "Lie of the Year":
It was a lie told in the critical state of Ohio in the final days of a close campaign -- that Jeep was moving its U.S. production to China. It originated with a conservative blogger, who twisted an accurate news story into a falsehood. Then it picked up steam when the Drudge Report ran with it. Even though Jeep's parent company gave a quick and clear denial, Mitt Romney repeated it and his campaign turned it into a TV ad.
And they stood by the claim, even as the media and the public expressed collective outrage against something so obviously false.
People often say that politicians don’t pay a price for deception, but this time was different: A flood of negative press coverage rained down on the Romney campaign, and he failed to turn the tide in Ohio, the most important state in the presidential election.
PolitiFact has selected Romney's claim that Barack Obama "sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China" at the cost of American jobs as the 2012 Lie of the Year.
Was there anything in the news today about Jeep?
Under the agreement, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. Ltd. will build one Jeep model in China for Chrysler for sale in China. A specific model was not announced.
Zeng Qinghong, general manager and chief executive of Guangzhou Automobile Group, and Mike Manley, Jeep president and CEO and head of Chrysler's international operations, signed the agreement at Chrysler headquarters here.
Good thing we bailed out Chrysler here, so they could expand factories in China. Jeep had previously sold around 50,000 vehicles in China, and the factory can now support the production of 500,000 vehicles a year. Should would be nice to have those jobs in the USA. It's not like the US Government has any ownership influence over where those vehicles are made, right? Oh, wait..
To be fair to Politifact, Romney did make his comment in 2012, and it didn't come true until 15 days into 2013.
I'm sure the protectors of Union Jobs on the Left will decry this move by Government Motors, taking jobs away from American Workers, right?
